You heard that right, big dairy, the dairy industry, whatever you wish to call them have gone ahead to try and slander plant milks and the "vegan dairy" by inventing wood milk.

You need to watch this instagram post and dairy greenwasher, Aubrey Plaza to understand where we are coming from.

The crux of this advert is that Aubrey and the dairy industry have invented "wood milk", so that they can use it as an analogy for plant milks which are on the rise at the moment.

After sarcastically promoting "wood milk", she then goes on to stating how it's ridiculous and not real milk and that only dairy milk is real milk, because you wouldn't put wood in a dairy product.

What is so incredibly hilarious about all of this is that wood filler, commonly known on ingredients lists as "cellulose", is used throughout the dairy industry in pre-shredded cheeses and dairy ice creams.

If you don't believe us, we headed straight to Walmarts website to find some dairy cheeses with wood pulp in it and the very first shredded cheese we opened  on the site contained this ingredient.

They have branded this as "Wood Milk" and even set up their own instagram and social media pages for it, potentially trying to riff on Elwoods Organic Dog Meat https://www.elwooddogmeat.com/meet-the-dogs

Wood pulp is added to processed dairy cheeses and also ice cream, and is claimed to improve the flavour but in reality it is just a cheap food filler.

More info about cellulose and wood pulp that is in dairy shredded cheeses can be seen here https://www.thekitchn.com/cellulose-the-wood-pulp-in-you-146276

What is even more hilarious is that they are not insulting vegans, but instead, their own customers who demand dairy products.

Aubrey finishes her ad promoting the dairy industry stating that she invested in "wood milk", when actually she is investing in the dairy industry by producing this green washing advert.

And this industry is responsible for but not limited to the death of baby calves after they are taken away from their mothers. (This is a common practice all around the world).

An industry that is the lead cause of river pollution and ocean dead zones around the world.

An industry that is the second largest emitter of green house gases after the energy industry.

The lead cause of deforestation and biodiversity loss.

And if you want to compare "wood milk" or plant milks and their environmental impact with dairy milks and cheeses, check out Our World In Data and the data below.

Cow’s milk has significantly higher impacts than the plant-based alternatives across all metrics. It causes around three times as much greenhouse gas emissions; uses around ten times as much land; two to twenty times as much freshwater; and creates much higher levels of eutrophication.
