How Long Does Vegan Cheese Last

How Long Does Vegan Cheese Last

We buy vegan cheese almost religiously and have a continuous amount of vegan cheese in our fridge.

Because of this it means we need to check how long each vegan cheese will last and stay good.

The last thing we want is for the vegan cheeses we haven't tried or have only had a slice of to go bad over the span of a few days or weeks.

With our vegan cheese experience, we now understand how long vegan cheese will last.

It all depends on where you will keep it and how the cheese is wrapped and even the type of cheese will all have varying degrees of length before their quality drops.

How Long Will Vegan Cheese Last in the Fridge

If you keep your vegan cheeses in the fridge this should drastically increase the length of time your vegan cheeses will last.

The optimum temperature is between 2 and 4c (degrees celcius) and will keep your cheeses from going bad.

We have personally had vegan cheeses last months in the fridge and when consumed before there best before date have been perfectly fine, and as good as they would have been if eaten immediately after purchasing.

We have also had vegan cheeses after there sell by date and still been very happy with their quality.

Not forgetting that some vegan cheeses, mostly the spreadable cream vegan cheeses will all require refrigeration to keep them from going off.

How Long They Will Last Depends on How They're Packaged

The most important point to remember when working out how long your vegan cheese will last is, how is it packaged?

We have had vegan cheeses in wax and paper wrappers which were not airtight and their quality dropped and would go bad within a couple of weeks, before their best before date.

If you check your vegan cheese to see if it is wrapped in an air tight and sealed wrapper, it will last much longer.

We find that these vegan cheeses will potentially last months.

And this same rule applies for vegan cheeses you have opened and then rewrapped.

If they are not completely sealed or air tight, they may only last a few days in the fridge before their quality drops

What if I Freeze My Vegan Cheese

If you freeze your vegan cheese, which we've talked more about in this post, you will find that you can extend the shelf-time of your vegan cheese indefinitely.

This is the perfect option for you if you have opened your vegan cheese and can't re-wrap it with an airtight seal.

If you buy a vegan cheese that you want to save for a gathering or party and event, you can put it in the freezer and it will last for many months. We do this regularly for vegan cheeses we can't get a hold of and buy a few of them so that we have a specifically tasty vegan cheese on us for the following months.

But you have to remember with this option of storage, you have to let the vegan cheese defrost and by doing this, will mean that you have to prepare and plan ahead so you give it time to do this before you require the cheese for a specific meal or to share with friends.

Make Sure to Check The Vegan Cheese Makers Website

If you are still unsure if you can leave a vegan cheese out for long, maybe you have a party or evening get together and foresee some vegan cheeses being out for hours and wondering if they're ok to put back in the fridge afterwards.

Make sure to check out the vegan cheese maker of the cheeses you have and see if they have any storage advice.

La Fauxmagerie and other vegan cheese makers have storage instructions on most of their cheeses.

Store in the fridge between 3-5C and consume within 5 days of opening. Wrap well or put in container after opening. Can be frozen for up to 2 months and defrosted in the fridge.

The above storage instructions is from one of their own vegan cheeses they make in-shop, the La Fauxmagerie Clapton Chive.

Some Vegan Cheeses Will Last For Months

If you like the dry vegan cheeses, the paremsan alternatives in jars or even nutritional yeast, you're in luck.

As these vegan cheese types will last months and months on a shelf or even the side of your kitchen without any issues and will be shelf stable until you require them.
