Recently you may be aware of the buyout of Sheese, Bute Islands Foods. They are one of the largest vegan cheese makers in the UK, if not the world and provide vegan cheese for some of the largest supermarkets in the United Kingdom.

Bute Island Foods, which makes vegan cheese alternative Sheese, has been acquired by Canadian dairy company Saputo whose labels include Cathedral City, Country Life, and Utterly Butterly.

Saputo have purchased Bute Islands Foods, who make Sheese and are not the only vegan cheese brand which are owned by giant non-vegan companies.

Which Vegan Cheese Brands are Vegan

With over 1000 vegan cheeses and growing in our database of vegan cheese, we thought it would be interesting to start to categorise the brands based on their values.

Below is just the start, and is a live and up-to-date list of the the non-vegan brands who make vegan cheese.

After initially categorising the vegan cheeses and brands, we found out that the majority of vegan cheese brands are actually vegan, made by small independent individuals and or shops who are also entirely vegan.

So to makes things simpler, we have listed just the brands who are not 100% vegan and own other food making brands which are not vegan.

Some, such as Saputo who have bought out Sheese also own dairy brands, like Cathedral City, a UK based dairy cheese manufacturer, amongst others.

Supermarket Vegan Cheese

Because some of the vegan cheese in our database is made by supermarkets, such as Sainsburys, Morrisons, etc, obviously these are not entirely vegan.

Other Non-Vegan Brands

You will also find other non-vegan brands in the list below, two of the largest are Violife and Applewood.

If you have recently transitioned to veganism, you will know that Applewood also do dairy cheese which uses animal products to create it's cheese.

Violife is another large and well known vegan cheese brand, who were bought out by Upfield. They tout themselve's as the largest plant based food company in the world, but they also own Flora who make dairy and animal based spreads.

Boursin is another newcomer to the vegan cheese game, with their new spreadable vegan cheese options. Again, most that are new to veganism and only recently given up dairy cheese and animal products may have had or will know about the Boursin brand who also do other non-vegan spreads and foods which are made with animal products.

As new vegan cheese brands get bought out by larger companies, we'll make sure to keep this list up to date for all those interested in this topic.
