One of the greatest things about living in the United Kingdom at the moment is the huge surge in popularity of vegan products. We have been inundated with them in the past 3-4 years and things seem to be getting better and better!
With this, means you can now buy nooch, nutritional yeast at nearly any supermarket here in the UK.
So, if you are keen to give nooch a go, below we'll go through some options you can find online and in store.
What is Nutritional Yeast
Usually nooch comes in a tub as a yellow or light orange flake, sort of looks like fish food flakes.
Nutritional yeast is produced by culturing a yeast in a nutrient medium for several days. The primary ingredient in the growth medium is glucose, often from either sugarcane or beet molasses. When the yeast is ready, it is deactivated with heat and then harvested, washed, dried and packaged.
You can buy them in small 100g tubs or even larger 1kg bags, depending on how much you love them.
What Can You Do With Nutritional Yeast
There are plenty of things you can do, if you're eating something savoury, you can literally just pour the nooch flakes directly on to it, doesn't matter if it's a sandwich or a lasagne, nutritional yeast seems to work with nearly everything, in our opinion.
We treat it like parmesan cheese, a dry flakey vegan cheese, that can be put on literally anything.
The great thing about it is that if we are making a vegan cheese sauce or any sauce we want to add to a meal, you can use nutritional yeast to make it more cheesy and nutty in flavour.
It is a very versatile ingredient and you can do a lot with it!
What is Nutritional Yeast Good For
As well as a source of fibre, it is also a source of protein and most importantly, vitamin B12.
The great thing is that you can get some fantastic health benefits from eating nutritional yeast flakes, but it also tastes great too.
This means it's great for your health and for making a tasty vegan meal, that little bit tastier.
For tonights meal we are having a simple pasta dish with some greens and a home made tomato sauce. When we're enjoying that and watching our favourite vegan Youtubers we'll more than likely add on to the top of it some nutritional yeast.
That should cover our daily vitamin B12 requirements as well making the meal taste a little bit nuttier.
